OA QB Rating: Through Week 4

In a previous post, I described my OA Quarterback rating.
Before I  show you the results for week 4, below is a graph showing each player's OA rating vs. his team's average points scored.

Overall, the rating is a pretty good predictor of points scored.
Who are the outliers?  Glad you asked.

Jay Cutler and Shaun Hill each have a negative OA QB rating - despite the fact that their teams are number 8 and 5, respectively,  in average points scored.  (I should point out that I don't tease out defensive TDs).

Cutler was killed by his week 4 showing against the Lions - averaging only 5.04 Y/A against a defense that gives up an average of almost 8.6.

Shaun Hill on the other hand has had a negative QB rating in every game except for one - the game he lost.  Hill was also hurt this week because his opponents, the Rams, had such a weak average Y/A (8.20) that he ended up with a bad score despite a not particularly horrible 6.33 Y/A and no interceptions.

Below are the OA QB Rating results through week 4 2009 (minimum 65 attempts).  Peyton Manning is still on a tear.

A few notes about the rankings:
  • Brett Favre made the biggest jump in the rankings with his  game Monday night - 8.7 Y/A and no interceptions.  Despite that, he still has a negative rating for the year.
  • David Garrard took the next biggest leap - moving from 22nd place all the way to 12th.  Don't look now, but the former East Carolina Pirate has increased his Y/A from 5.7 to 6.8 in the last two games - both victories.
  • Peyton Manning's opponents this year rank last (Miami), 30th (Jacksonville), 29th (Arizona) and 17th (Seattle).  Before the haters start crying easy schedule, the story changes when you calculate their Y/A minus their game against Manning.  Seattle moves up to 8th and Arizona is 14th.  Miami and Jacksonville still rank 26th and 31st, respectively.
